Asymmetric Information – School Strike in England

According to an online survey, almost half of the schools in England and Wales could be forced to shut down due to the first National School Strike in 21 years. The survey states that 6 out of 10 teachers back the National Union of Teacher’s 24-hour strike on 24 April. Furthermore, more than 47 percent of 7,300 teachers polled by the Times Educational Supplement thought the strikes would close their schools.

The English government however, stated that the poll was unrepresentative of the teacher’s views. The National Union of Teachers demands pay rises for teachers equivalent to the rate of inflation as measured by the Retail Prices Index. The English government has called on the Union to reconsider its plans that if implemented would disrupt children’s education.

The last national teacher’s strike ended in March 1987.
