Economic Focus – Iran’s Barbie Doll Ban

Ghorban Ali Dori Najafabadi, the Prosecutor General of Iran has called for a ban on Western toys that might have a destructive effect on the country’s youth. The toys subject to criticism from Iran were toys related to Barbie, Batman, and Harry Potter.

Mr Najafabadi according to BBC wanted to take this measure to protect Iran’s Islamic culture and revolutionary values. Correspondence from the same source stated the opposite by commenting on the increased popularity of Western culture in Iran.

Iran used to be the heart of the Persian Empire way back in ancient history. The Persian Empire’s founding father is said to be King Cyrus the great who defeated all neighbouring nations to consolidate the power of the Persian Empire.

One of the most notable act of tolerance in history occurred when King Cyrus permitted the Jews to return to their homeland in Jerusalem after years of slavery in Babylon. While this move was obviously one made to gain the support of ethnic minorities within his empire, it was clear that Cyrus could have chosen otherwise.

The current Iran lacks the tolerance that Cyrus once had. Worst still is the fact that banning such popular toy brands might have an adverse effect on the toy business industry in Iran. By marginalizing the West, Iran may in fact be marginalizing itself.
