The Government cannot afford to offer all high achievers a scholarship for overseas studies, said the Public Services Department (PSD) aka (Peanut Scholarship Delivery). With the widespread mismanagement (KL’s notorious ‘white elephants’) and corruption issues (Zakaria’s mansion), one can only wonder why the Government cannot ‘afford’ more scholarships.

Worst still is the fact that many people have complained over the way the scholarships are given that lacks transparency and fairness. Scholarships are vital as an incentive for the development of human capital in the country. If Malaysia do not increase their provision for scholarships, neighbouring countries like Singapore would give them.

This would lead to a widespread ‘brain drain’ in the sense that local studentsstudy and most probably work in other countries (never to return). Rather than feeding the greed of corrupt officials and cronies, would not it be better to provide genuine scholarships for the needy?
