Eternity in an Hour

Sometimes I wonder whether I should make a record of all or rather most of my thoughts. Then an inner voice would whisper on the purpose of such an endeavour. Why should one record his/her thoughts?

It is rather meaningless to record what you are thinking just for the  purpose of recording what is going on in my head. Worse still is the fact that sometimes I don’t really want to know what I am thinking or where my mind is headed to.

Nothing really changes really. A new idea is most of the time conceptually the same with an old idea by some dead or long lost person. Philosophers, Politicians, Economists, Environmentalists, debate over some of the same questions that plagued mankind since the dawn of an intelligent life on this planet.

Yet, no answer can be found. No solution. No recourse or remorse can be either found nor felt as civilizations and cultures clashed with one another in an endless dance of whom neither is the winner.

Look into the past, into the depth and soul of humanity’s problems. Poverty, famine, diseases, and greed have always and will ever be the epicenter of each new generation. While some have been born into palaces, others have been born in the slumps which may remain as their ‘home’ forever.

When we see infinite suffering and unmatched wealth coexists side by side, sometimes we would pause and ask ourselves, “What is the World or God or the Creator trying to tell us?”

Is there really an omnipresent and omnipotent Creator who really watches us suffer? Is this all-powerful being a benevolent dictator? If so, why the inequality in everything? Why the immense suffering of the many for the sake of sustaining the few?

What is ‘life’ trying to tell us?

When the  world saw how people like Genghis Khan, Tamerlane, and Attila wrecked havoc to entrenched civilizations, we can pretend no longer. When we see the rise of great civilizations with boundless hope and their fall in endless despair, we can hide no longer.

When we see the young and and barely seasoned followed Napoleon, Emperor of France into the heart of the Russian winter just to march, to fight, and to die, we cannot cheat ourselves any longer. When at last, millions perished under the hands of an Austrian madman for the sake of a better future and a master race, we know that humanity has not changed even a single bit!

We now know that even as humanity build dams and irrigation to divert and control the power of water, nothing has changed. Even as humanity build tombs and mausoleums for their honored dead, much of what was gained in knowledge, wisdom, and stature would be forgotten.

Even as humanity build windmills and ships with sails to harness the power of the wind, we see that greater power only served to increase the greedy ambitions of the few. And even as humanity brought to light gunpowder and steamships, utopia is no where to be found.

We marvel at the beauty of the Acropolis, the Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, and Machu Pichu as a symbol of humanity’s triumph over nature and over barbarianism. Yet, humanity’s heart and  soul have made no such progress.

It is true that there are those who would give up their rightful place on earth for others. And even some who would bear unbearable pain and suffering for the good of all. But sadly, these people are few and scattered among nations.

Look back at the lies that were told and forgotten! Remember how Napoleon, Hitler, Francis Bacon, Karl Marx, and many others promised of an Utopia, a Shanggri La, and a heaven on earth! Know them and know that they are but a bunch of empty promises and lies!

The French Revolution brought not the liberty, fraternity, and equality that was promised but increased pain and suffering. In the end, only these chilling words remain, “As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be.”
