The Voyage of Life Old Age by Cole Thomas

Oh, lying optimism,

How you but cheat my heart.

Fighting pessimism,

For which you played no part.

Endlessly promising,

A light at the end of the tunnel,

Falsely prophesying,

An answer coming through a funnel.

All but in fair vanity,

That man does not live on bread alone.

When in calm sanity,

Man with his work for his bread atone.

Ignorance but bliss,

Hiding the truth of mortality.

For like a lover’s kiss,

It drives away all melancholy.

But where do you abide,

When times are hard and unforgiving?

I see you cower and hide,

Underneath my soul of broken feelings.

So, lying optimism,

You have betrayed me as a friend.

For faithful pessimism,

Have stood with me till the very end.
