An Overview – The Brain

The brain is truly a miraculous organ. It regulates our thoughts, memory, judgment, personal identity, and other aspects of what we refer to as our mind. Yet the brain of an adult human being weighs only about 3 pounds (1.4 kg).

The brain is made up of 3 distinct parts, the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. The brain can then be divided into the right and left hemispheres of the cerebrum, the brainstem, and the cerebellum.

Cerebrum
The largest and most highly developed part of the brain. It can be divided into four sections/lobes:
1) the frontal lobe – controls cognition, including speech, planning, and problem solving.
2) the parietal lobe – controls sensations, touch, pressure and judging size and shape.
3) the temporal lobe – mediates visual, and verbal memory, and smell.
4) the occipital lobe – controls visual perceptions and recognition of shapes and colours.
