Psionics in Fiction

Psionics

Psionics is the study and/or practice of using the mind to induce paranormal phenomena. Examples of this include telepathy, telekinesis and other workings of the outside world through the psyche. The topic is widely discussed in fiction.

Of particular note are Talents with such high psionic potential that, combined with the ability to tap into generated power sources to enhance their abilities, they can telekinetically move objects and telepathically communicate instantaneously across interstellar distances. With the aid of these “Prime” Talents, humanity moves forward to colonize other planets and star systems without developing technological means of interstellar travel.

Professor X

  • Xavier can read, control and influence human minds
  • A scientific genius, he is also a leading authority on genetics, mutation, and psionic powers
  • Professor X is able to perceive the thoughts of others or project his own thoughts within a radius of approximately 250 miles (402 km)
  • He can learn foreign languages by reading the language centers of the brain of someone adept, and alternately “teach” languages to others in the same manner; Xavier once trained a new group of mutants mentally, subjectively making them experience months of training together, while only hours passed in the real world
  • Xavier’s vast psionic powers enable him to manipulate the minds of others, warp perceptions to make himself seem invisible, project mental illusions, cause loss of particular memories, and induce pain or temporary mental and/or physical paralysis in others
  • He can only take full possession of one other mind at a time, and must strictly be within that person’s physical presence
  • He is one of the few telepaths skilled enough to communicate with animals and even share their perceptions
  • He can also project powerful mental ‘bolts,’ enabling him to stun the mind of another person into unconsciousness or even cause death
  • Professor X can project his ‘astral form’ into a psychic ‘dimension’ known as the ‘astral plane.’
  • There, he can use his powers to create objects, control his surroundings, and even control and destroy the astral forms of others
  • During his travels in Asia, Xavier learned martial arts, acquiring “refined combat skills” according to Magneto. When these skills are coordinated in tandem with his telepathic abilities, Xavier is a dangerous unarmed combatant, capable of sensing the intentions of others and countering them with superhuman efficiency. He also has extensive knowledge of pressure points

Jean Grey

  • Jean has potentially limitless psionic powers of telepathy, telekinesis, cosmic pyrokinesis and energy manipulation
  • When bonded to the Phoenix, she is said to outclass mutants, granting her complete control over matter, energy, thought, and unlimited psionic energies
  • Jean’s telepathy allows her to read, influence, control, and communicate with the minds of others, project her mind into the astral plane, and generate telepathic force blasts that can stun or kill others
  • Jean is one of the few telepaths skilled enough to communicate with animals (animals with high intelligence, such as dolphins, dogs, and ravens)
  • She can also telepathically take away or control people’s natural bodily functions and senses, such as sight, hearing, smell, taste, or even mutant powers
  • A side effect of her telepathy is that she is gifted with an eidetic memory
  • Her telekinetic strength and skill are both of an extremely high level, capable of grasping objects in Earth orbit and manipulating hundreds of components in mid-air in complex patterns

Mastermind

  • The original Mastermind was a mutant with the power to generate complex telepathic illusions
  • Mastermind’s mutant powers are of illusion casting
  • He can psionically cause other people to see, hear, touch, smell, and/or taste things that do not actually exist
  • He can also cause people to sense things in ways that they would not naturally; for example, he can make himself look and sound like a different person, or look and feel like a wall, or even seem invisible

Psylocke

  • Psylocke originally possessed the power of telepathy
  • She could read and project thoughts over long distances; control minds; project mental illusions; and generate psi-bolts that could stun, injure, or kill others
  • She could also project her astral self, and the astral bodies of other people, into the astral plane
  • She could scan entire towns with her mind, and leaf through the psyches of the inhabitants of a city to learn of their condition or intentions
  • Psylocke also possessed limited precognitive powers that occasionally allowed her to envision probable future events, or to see quick flashes of the future

Emma Frost

  • Frost has displayed the telepathic standards of broadcasting and receiving thoughts, mind-control, altering perceptions and memories, psionic blast projection, astral projection, mind switching, brain engram modification, mental sedation and induction of mental pain via touch
  • Ability to levitate several objects and individuals in the room

Rachel Summers

  • Rachel is a mutant who possesses the various psionic powers including telepathy, psychometry, and telekinesis as well as limited time manipulation abilities
  • Marvel Girl’s “virtually unlimited” telepathy allows her to read minds and project her thoughts into other’s minds as well as form mind links that can connect her with another despite great distances or power inhibitors
  • Rachel has honed her telepathy to sense, locate and track other mutants based on their thought patterns, but has a moral apprehension about using this telepathic skill based on her experiences as a Hound
  • Rachel can use her telepathy to project a blast of psi-energy that can disrupt the higher functions of the brain, and defensively shield her mind from other telepaths, create illusions, sensory invisibility and edit memories
