The Importance of fats

  1. Important for providing energy and maintaining body temperature
  2. Insulates and acts as a shock absorber for bones and organs
  3. Helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K
  4. Is a structural component of myelin, the fatty insulating sheath surrounding each nerve fibre, enabling it to carry messages faster
Summary of Fats in Foods
Good Fats
Polyunsaturated fats Omega-3 (ALA, EPA, DHA Flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, milk, soybeans, salmon, mackerel, herring, sardine, anchovies, tuna, eggs Choose coldwater carnivorous fish ā€“ a serving of salmon, 2 or 3 times a week
Monounsaturated fats Omega-6 (LA, GLA, AA) Corn, sunflower, safflower, and sesame seeds, legumes, walnut You get more goodness out of them by grinding them first and sprinkling them on cereals, soups and salads
Nuts, avorcado, olive oil, carnola and peanut oil Virgin oil is best eaten raw as cooking with it will produce some trans fat
Harmful Fats
Saturated Fats Meat products, hard cheese, butter, pastry and sour cream Control intake of these foods
Trans Fat Partially hydrogenated margarine, high-fat baked goods, shortening, certain salty snacks and commercial frying fats Avoid fried and processed food and baked goods with a long shelf life. Always check food labels
