1799: British Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger introduces income tax, at two shillings in the pound, to raise funds for the Napoleonic War.

1828: The Duke of Wellington becomes Prime Minister.

1873: French Emperor Napoleon III dies in exile in England.

1916: The British abandon Gallipoli.
