Philosophy of the Day ~ The Truth Resides in the World Around Us

Aristotle’s Train of Thought:

  1. We see different kinds of horses in our world.
  2. We recognize that each horse shares similar characteristics with other horses.
  3. We use our senses and our reason to understand what horses really are.
  4. Therefore, we find truth from the evidence in the world around us.
In Plato The School of Athens, a fresco by Raphael, Plato stands on the left while Aristotle stands on the right. Aristotle gestures to the earth, representing his belief in knowledge through empirical observation and experience, while holding a copy of his Nicomachean Ethics in his hand. Plato holds his Timaeus and gestures to the heavens, representing his belief in his Theory of the Forms.
