Day 163: June 12 – Reading Is A Virtue?

~ London Zoo

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others.

~ Francis Bacon

He writes so well, he makes me feel like putting my quill back in my goose.

~ Fred Allen

What Happened

1931: Gangster Al Capone and 68 of his henchmen are indicted for violating Prohibition Laws.

Writer’s Addendum

Books, books, books. The whole world is ruled by books. The Torah, the Bible, the Quran, the Confucian Analects and other religious books. Where are the laws? In books. Where are the policies to govern nations? On paper. And yet, if you really look at the books on your bookshelves, how many books can be thrown into the gutter?

Reading is a virtue only if you read the what is worth reading. “The multitudes of books makes us ignorant,” said Voltaire. And he is so very right.

Do some spring cleaning. Choose only books that are worth reading. For a bad book usually does more harm than good.
