Day 170: June 19 – The Importance of Division of Labor

~ Norfolk Heritage Park

The greatest improvement in the productive powers of labour, and the greater part of the skill, dexterity and judgment with which it is any where directed, as applied, seem to have been the effects of the division of labor.

~ Adam Smith

I would rather have people laugh at my economies than weep for my extravagance.

~ Oscar II, King of Sweden

What Happened

1623: Birth of French Philosopher Blaise Pascal.

1867: Mexican Emperor Maximilian is executed by a firing squad.

Writer’s Addendum

Imagine a world where there is no division of labor. Every man will need to hunt for food cause there will be no one working in the supermarkets. There will be no taxis, no banks, no coffeehouses, no bartenders, no hotels, no restaurants. It would be back to the stone age all over again.

So next time when you see a white or blue collar worker, congratulate him for a job well done. Society only functions well when everyone plays their part.
