A Compilation Of Philosophical Proverbs And Quotes For The Young And Lost
~ Netherlandish Proverbs by Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Proverbs are a mystery. They strike us when we least expect it. Use them correctly and they trigger countless ideas and memories. Use them in the wrong situations and you get confused stares and puzzled looks. As the saying goes: ‘Proverbs are like butterflies, some are caught, others fly away.’
Some proverbs are long sentences that rhyme; others are so short that they are just a couple of words. Older people, especially those with greying hair and wrinkles, are the most common folk that use proverbs to great effect. The ways that they use them to teach and to rebuke seem to hint younger generations of their past experiences. Fingers burnt, lessons learnt, and out comes a proverb! It is no wonder that people say, ‘proverbs are children of experience.’
Hold fast to the words of your ancestors. Proverbs are precious gems that our forefathers have left us to show us a path, to guide our actions and to humour us when our tragedies sometimes become comedies.
It is for this reason, that I have compiled a series of proverbs from A to Z for the young and lost. In many ways, we are all young and lost. We wake up every morning to a world filled with uncertainty. We do things without knowing the full extent of their consequences. Sometimes we wish that life would be clearer, simpler, and easier
This is where proverbs come in. They are brief, they are practical, and they are truthful. “A proverb,” said Lord John Russell, “is the wit of one and the wisdom of many.” Perhaps this compilation of proverbs and quotes from famous men and women will give you a guide in your everyday life. Maybe they will humour you. Whatever they may be, always remember: time passes away, but sayings remain.
A good maxim is never out of season.
